The San Diego Padres were held without a hit through four innings of play against the Athletics at the Peoria Sports Complex on Monday. That came to an end when Gavin Sheets stepped to the plate and delivered a single to right field. Sheets was followed by Nick Castellanos who grounded into a fielder’s choice which resulted in Sheets being forced out at second. Sung-Mun Song then singled to push Castellanos to second base and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Freddy Fermin grounded out to second base which allowed Castellanos to score and moved Song to third. Mason McCoy walked to put runners at the corners, but the inning came to a close when Jake Cronenworth flied out to left field, making the score 7-1 after five innings.

The Padres were able to add a second run in the bottom of the ninth inning when Jase Bowen hit a leadoff home run to center field to make the score, 7-2. San Diego was unable to add any additional runs, and the Padres dropped their second game in a row.

Michael King started on the mound for San Diego and had a rough outing. He allowed a two-run home run in the top of the first to Tyler Soderstrom, but then recorded two strikeouts to end the inning. King returned to the mound in the second and with two outs, he allowed back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases. Shea Langeliers delivered a two-run single that put the Athletics up, 4-0 and forced King off the mound.

Sadrac Franco got the final out of the inning on a groundout and King returned to the game and the mound for the top of the third inning. He allowed a leadoff single, but then induced a groundball double play that marked the end of his afternoon. King finished his day with a final line of 2.1 innings pitched with four runs allowed on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Omar Cruz took over for King needing just one out to end the third inning, but he allowed a walk and back-to-back singles, which allowed the Athletics to make the score, 5-0. A throwing error by Song on a ground ball to third allowed another run to score and gave the Athletics a 6-0 lead. Nick Kurtz then hit a groundball single to second base to score the seventh and final run of the game for the Athletics before Cruz finally got Langeliers to flyout to end the inning.

The Padres found themselves down 7-0 after three innings and their lack of offense prevented them from climbing back into the game. Cruz remained in the game in the fourth, but allowed a double, got a strikeout and allowed a single to put runners at the corners for the Athletics before Logan Gillaspie was called into the game. He got a strikeout and a groundout to prevent any additional runs from scoring and ended the inning.

Gillaspie, Jagger Haynes, Manuel Castro and Jackson Wolf combined to work 5.2 innings, allowing no runs on two hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
