Collin Morikawa gives immediate reaction to Luke Donald returning as Ryder Cup captain

Luke Donald will once again captain Europe at the Ryder Cup, with the Englishman staying on for the 2027 event at Adare Manor in Ireland.
Donald’s return was made official on Wednesday, confirming he’ll become only the second man to captain Europe three times after Bernard Gallacher.

Collin Morikawa has now commented on the news, having played under two different US captains during Donald’s tenure.
Morikawa saw firsthand how effective Donald was in both 2023 and 2025 when Europe got the better of a US team that came in as favourites both times.
The Americans were taken apart by a sharper European side at Marco Simone and again at Bethpage Black despite a late singles rally from the home team. Both sides will have fresh leadership for 2027. The Americans have yet to name their next captain, but all eyes are already on Tiger Woods to take over from Zach Johnson.

He was asked what he thought about Donald coming back for another stint.
“Yeah, I mean, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” the American said.
“I know there’s precedent set ahead before. But I know personally, through Luke Donald, he’s an amazing human being.
“It sounds like their team loves him and they have kind of found that groove. So good for them and they’re going to be great team come next year.“
The US will have a tough challenge stopping Europe from claiming a third consecutive Ryder Cup win in Ireland in 2027.
With Donald leading the European side again, playing them on the road won’t be an easy task for the Americans.
How Rory McIlroy responded to Luke Donald being named captain again
Rory McIlroy also spoke about the decision, sharing his thoughts on what it means for the team.
“Yeah, it’s amazing,” McIlroy stated.
“I think it’s obviously a huge advantage for the European team to have that continuity and that consistency. I was sort of banging on that drum going into Bethpage. And we’ll have it even more so again, you know.
“We might not have — the team may be a little bit different, or it could be, you know it was obviously really similar to Bethpage to what it was in Rome. I maybe envision a couple other guys maybe breaking their way on to the team.
“But it’s wonderful to have Luke back. There’s not one player or one person behind the scenes that helps with Ryder Cup Europe that isn’t thrilled that Luke agreed to come back and do it again.“
The continuity Donald brings is something McIlroy clearly values. Meanwhile, over in America, there are probably more than a few hoping this would be where Donald stepped away from captaincy after Bethpage Black.
