After criticizing Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for foul-baiting and NBA referees for rewarding it last week, Jaylen Brown had a historic game at the free-throw line for the Boston Celtics on Monday night.
Brown went 19 for 21 at the charity stripe, setting career highs in makes and attempts. That accounted for nearly half of his 41 points as he led the Celtics to a 120-112 victory over the Phoenix Suns at TD Garden.
In the process, Brown became just the third Boston player in the last 20 years to attempt at least 20 foul shots in a game, joining Paul Pierce and Jayson Tatum. He attacked the basketball all night long, getting 10 free throw attempts in the first quarter alone.

Brown has been the Celtics' MVP all season, and that was true again on Monday. He also notched seven rebounds, six assists, a steal and a block, putting together one of his most complete games of the year.
Devin Booker nearly matched him, netting 40 points in a losing effort for the Suns. That helped keep the game close for most of the night until Boston finally pulled away during crunch time.
Brown had help from Derrick White and Payton Pritchard, who combined for 40 points and 10 3-pointers. Jayson Tatum also played well, topping 20 points for the fourth straight game.
The Celtics improved to 45-23 with their second straight win. They'll host the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday, when they'll reunite with old friends Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis.
