The Patriotsare currently in wait-and-see mode regarding a potential trade for Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown.

New England has the draft capital to pull off a trade, but the Eagles might wait until after June 1 to finalize the deal. If they trade Brown before June 2, they would incur a hefty $43 million dead cap hit this season.

The Eagles would incur only $16 million in dead cap this season if they trade Brown after June 1, which is more likely at this point.

Since trades made after June 1 can’t be finalized until that date, any potential trade wouldn’t be able to include 2026 NFL Draft picks. This means New England would have to offer the Eagles 2027 and possibly 2028 picks. Here’s a possible trade suggestion.

Trade Pitch Sends Brown To New England

Patriots Get: Brown

Eagles Get: 2027 second-round pick, 2027 sixth-round pick, (via New Orleans) and 2028 fourth-round pick.

The Eagles will probably seek a first-round pick in return for Brown, and if they don’t trade him before this year’s draft, no team should be willing to part with a 2027 first-rounder for him.

It makes sense for New England to consider trading their first-round pick this year, especially since it’s No. 31, which is almost like an early second-round selection. However, given this scenario, the Eagles are not willing to trade Brown until after June 1; the best offer the Patriots should make is a 2027 second-round pick.

New England should be unwilling to part with a first-round pick next year, especially since it could end up being in the middle of the round if the Patriots take a step back. Trading the No. 31 pick is a different ball game compared to trading the No. 15 pick, and there's a good chance that New England could be in a favorable position around that range in 2027.

If Brown were a bit younger and not turning 29 this year, it might make sense for the Eagles to get a first-round pick in 2027. Yet the Bills recently traded for Chicago Bears wide receiver DJ Moore, giving up a 2026 second-round pick. Moore is also turning 29 this year and has posted stats comparable to Brown's.

The Patriots may have overpaid a bit in this potential deal by including a fourth-round pick in 2028. Since the Eagles might be tough to negotiate with on their asking price for a first-round pick, including the fourth-round selection could sweeten the deal.
