Calais Campbell is only Cardinals player to be among top remaining free agents

The NFL and the Arizona Cardinals are now two weeks into the start of free agency. The Cardinals have made additions at almost every position group.

They have added many players, and a few of their own free agents have landed elsewhere.

One Cardinals free agent remains available, and he is the only player from the Cardinals in 2025 to be among the 21 players left unsigned from NFL.com's list of the 101 best free agents.

That player? It is defensive tackle Calais Campbell, who started free agency ranked No. 40 of the top 101. Now he is the second-best free agent remaining behind receiver Jauan Jennings.

There’s no official word about whether Campbell will retire. It’s outrageous how he continually winds up being the best defensive lineman -- or close to it -- on every team he joins, with his 40th birthday (Sept. 1) now on the horizon.

Campbell's status is all about him. He would be signed already if he had made the decision to play. His return to Arizona appeared to be a move to prepare for retirement, but after he had another 6.5 sacks, the door is open. If he wants to play, someone will want to sign him.

The one thing that seems certain is that, if he returns, it won't be with the Cardinals. He will want to go somewhere with a chance to win. He believed last year that the Cardinals would be able to compete, but then it turned into a 3-14 disaster.

If that is it for Campbell, he has likely done enough to land himself in the Hall of Fame.
