Mills told fans “see you tomorrow” last Tuesday — but then he was replaced for the rest of the week with veteran DJ Gary Davies, who simply told listeners, “Morning, Gary in for Scott.”

Jeremy Vine spoke of his co-star’s firing on Monday morning’s show, saying he was “taken aback” by the news.

“I had not heard anything about it until 17 minutes ago, when it was on the BBC website , and I only had the information that was given to you in the bulletin, I have nothing more, that it was allegations about Scott Mills’s personal conduct which have led to him being sacked. I have no more than that,” he said, per the Manchester Evening News , before continuing on with the show.

A BBC spokesperson said in a statement that “while we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted and has left the BBC.”

What the BBC said

In an email to staff, Lorna Clarke, director of music at the broadcaster, said she “wanted to personally let you know that Scott Mills has left the breakfast show, and the BBC.”

She continued: “I know that this news will be sudden and unexpected and therefore must come as a shock. Not least as so many of us have worked with Scott over a great many years, across a broad range of our programs on R1, 5Live, R2 and TV.”

Clarke added: “I felt it was important to share this news with you at the earliest opportunity. Of course, it will also come as a shock to our audience and loyal breakfast show listeners too.”

She noted that she could not provide any further details but would update staffers once she is able.

Mills’ history with the BBC

Mills joined Radio 2’s weekday schedule in 2022, when he replaced Steve Wright as the host of the afternoon slot.

The 53-year-old took over the breakfast show on Radio 2 from Zoe Ball in January 2025.

Before that, he had worked on Radio 1 since 1998 and appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in 2014.

Mills won the BBC’s Celebrity Race Across The World in 2024 with his now-husband Sam Vaughan.

His morning show was the most listened to in the U.K., with an audience of 6.5 million last month, the BBC reported.

Mills was the 11th highest-paid star at the BBC, according to the outlet, earning between £355,000 and £359,999 (C$652,000 and $661,000).
