The derailment has reportedly left a bridge on the Welland Canal inoperable.
A spokesperson for the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp. told NiagaraThisWeek.com that while vehicular traffic has resumed, a railway bridge on the canal can’t be raised.
Though no ships were affected as none were scheduled to pass Monday morning, the spokesperson told the outlet it’s unclear when the bridge can be raised.
Go Transit trains in Niagara were also affected by the derailment.
”Lakeshore West trains are unable to service St. Catharines and Niagara Falls GO until further notice due to a freight derailment in the Niagara Region,” Go Transit said on its website .
It said customers travelling between St. Catharines and Niagara Falls can take the route 12 buses from Burlington GO, stopping at St. Catharines Fairview Mall before arriving at Niagara Falls Bus Terminal.
Customers travelling to Union Station were advised to take the route 12 bus to Burlington GO to connect to an eastbound train.
