The explosive comments made by Marc Cucurella about Chelsea this week were largely agreed with by Chelsea fans. But there was one thing he got very wrong.
The defender wasn’t happy about the incident against Newcastle, where Chelsea formed their pre-game huddle around the match official.
“To me, it was a lack of respect [from referee Paul Tierney]. He could have come and told us, ‘Look, you cannot do that for this reason’,” the defender said.
“But instead, he came and stayed in the middle. I don’t want to speak more about it, honestly. I did not understand it. I believed he wanted to have his moment.”
Chelsea players made their own problems in huddle incident
Cucurella is right in that Tierney was determined to make the moment about himself. But it was equally stupid from the perspective of the players. Once the referee had decided that he was going to stay over the penalty spot, no matter what, the players should simply have shifted over.
They didn’t, they looked foolish, they lost the game. Don’t come out and blame the referee.
Once again, it shows a shocking lack of initiative and leadership from the group.
