Volkswagen gives first glimpse of incoming refreshed Caddy

Volkswagen has provided the first glimpse of the updated, internally named SB Caddy, which was unveiled before the onset of the global pandemic six years ago.

What’s new?
Going on sale later this year, only select details of the Caddy’s exterior changes were announced. These comprise a new front bumper and grille, new headlights and alloy wheels between 16 and 18-inches.

Not detailed were the changes to the interior. However, Volkswagen has stated the inclusion of “a larger, free-standing central display”.
It added that final details will only be revealed ones pre-sales commence in the “middle of the year”.
Standard or Maxi wheelbase
On the model front, the Caddy Cargo van and passenger derivatives continue to be offered in standard and long-wheelbase Maxi bodystyles.
Trim levels consist of base, Life, Style, Edition and California variants.
California will, again, be the flagship version of the passenger Caddy range. Picture: VolkswagenSeemingly unique to Europe is a Flexible version of the passenger van, which Volkswagen categorises as “turning a five-seater into a full-fledged two-seater van with a partition wall in a few simple steps”.
As before, buyers will have the option of dual sliding electric side doors, a barn-style opening rear door and a traditional tailgate with or without electric assistance.
Seating ranges from two to seven, and the claimed tow rating up to 1 500kg depending on the selected model. Up to 3 100-litres can be stored in the Maxi version of the panel van.
Petrol, hybrid or diesel
Up front, no technical detail was revealed. However, it is expected that the choice of powertrains will continue without change.
As such, expect 84kW/220Nm from the 1.5 TSI Evo and a combined 110kW/350Nm from the plug-in hybrid 1.5 TSI eHybrid.
Diesel power will come from the 2.0 TDI in two states of tune; 75kW/280Nm and 90kW/320Nm.
Transmissions consist of a six-speed manual, a seven-speed DSG and a six-speed DSG in the case of the eHybrid.
4Motion all-wheel drive is again optional, but only the flagship TDI and in conjunction with the manual gearbox.
Locally
Available in South Africa since 2022, the updated Caddy’s arrival is still to be announced. However, expect an announcement only once production at the Poznań plant in Poland commences.
Locally, six models are offered; three Cargo vans and three passenger models, powered by the 75kW 2.0 TDI and the long-serving normally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol that develops 81kW/152Nm.
Prices start at R466 700 for the standard wheelbase 1.6 Cargo and end at R722 900 for the 2.0 TDI Maxi DSG passenger van.
