East Lansing — A great season for Detroit Douglass ended short of its ultimate goal.

Seeking its first Division 4 state championship since 2021, Douglass had to settle for state runner-up, losing 60-47 to Concord in Saturday morning’s state championship game at Michigan State University’s Breslin Center.

It was the first state title in school history for Concord, which is located just southwest of Jackson.

The game was tied at 41-41 going into the fourth quarter, but Concord made the winning plays in the final eight minutes, surging ahead with a 9-2 run to take a 54-45 lead with 1:50 remaining.

Douglass couldn’t generate turnovers with a desperate full-court press, and Concord kept adding to its lead with free throws in the final couple minutes.

Freshman Damani Oliver scored 15 points in defeat for Douglass (21-8).
