Red Sox reporter Brendan Campbell of SoxProspects reported on X that Boston has released former third-overall pick, Brendan Rodgers, from his minor-league deal.
“The Red Sox have released veteran infielder Brendan Rodgers, who was in camp as a non-roster invite this spring before suffering a right shoulder injury earlier this month that ultimately required surgery,” Campbell wrote on X.
Boston signed Rodgers to a minor-league deal on February 5 with an invite to spring training. He was set to compete for a bench spot with the Red Sox as a glove-first infielder, but injuries derailed his chances.
Rodgers suffered a shoulder injury, which limited him to just three spring training games. Now, with the veteran infielder set to go under the knife, Boston reportedly opted to release him as Rodgers will now focus on his rehab.
Rodgers was selected third overall by the Colorado Rockies in the 2015 MLB Draft out of high school. He made his MLB debut in 2019 and won a Gold Glove Award in 2022. Rodgers spent parts of six seasons with the Rockies and was with the Houston Astros last season, but was limited to 43 games due to an injury.
In his MLB career, Rodgers has appeared in 495 games, hitting .261 with 47 home runs and 208 RBIs.
The Red Sox will open their 2026 MLB season on Thursday on the road against the Cincinnati Reds.
