Ben White booed by England fans after scoring in feisty draw with Uruguay

· Yahoo Sports

Ben White had an eventful cameo for England - Molly Darlington/Getty Images

When Ben White agreed to return for England duty after more than three years in international exile, he will doubtless have hoped for a comeback that attracted the minimum of attention.

By the final whistle, he had played little more than 15 minutes, scored a goal, conceded a penalty and been booed at every juncture by the home crowd. Of all those events, it was the roar of disapproval that greeted his name being announced as the England goalscorer – his first for his country in five caps – that was perhaps most remarkable. This is not an England crowd that forgives easily.

Visit catcrossgame.com for more information.

White’s withdrawal mid-tournament from the 2022 Qatar World Cup will now surely follow him around forever. He was booed when he came on as a second half substitute – his first England appearance in almost four years. Meanwhile, it was fierce on the touchline where Thomas Tuchel was furious with his fellow Germans – the officials – for three decisions that changed the course of the match.

The first was the refusal to dismiss defender Ronald Araújo for a dismal second half challenge on Phil Foden that might yet have repercussions for the Manchester City man. Next was confusion over whether referee Sven Jablonski had given Manuel Ugarte two yellow cards but failed to dismiss him before the Manchester United midfielder was swiftly replaced by Marcelo Bielsa.

Then there was the small matter of the softest of penalty awards in the third minute of time added on at the end when Jablonski judged White to have gone with a high boot on Federico Vinas. The referee was referred to the screen by his VAR Soren Stocks and decided it reached the threshold. Federico Valverde, who had an outstanding game, dispatched the equaliser from the spot in the 95th minute.

It might even have ended in defeat for England had it not been for two fine late blocks from the indefatigable Harry Maguire.

England play Japan on Tuesday night and then will have two games, against Costa Rica and New Zealand, in June before the World Cup starts so very little time in terms of game-time for Thomas Tuchel to prepare for the tournament.

Some of your views

  • Peter Garland: “Farcical refereeing, Var is useless, England robbed.”
  • Gareth Allen: “Turned it off at half time, dreadful watch. I’ve been watching England since 1990 and not including Italia 90 They’re just not good enough. They are made to look better by foreign team mates in the premier league and technically aren’t that good because the prem is physicality before skill. USA beat Uruguay 5-1.”
  • Andrew Mayers: “Solanke and Calvin Lewin failed the audition. Glimpses of class from Palmer. Wharton and Garner did OK and Bowen at least tries to go forward.”
  • William Logan: “That match was a farce.”
  • Les Hossack: “Totally embarrassing officiating. Poor performance by England not helped by the referee. How can you rescind a blatant 2nd yellow card?”

Tensions running high

Big bust-up at the final whistle. Thomas Tuchel refused to shake the hand of the fourth official, fellow German referee Benjamin Brand, and the row carried on down the tunnel. The England head coach was not waiting for referee Sven Jablonski.

Missed opportunity?

Plenty of players had their chance to impress Thomas Tuchel tonight and stake a strong claim for a place on the plane in the summer but it did not feel like many really took that opportunity. You can have your say in the comments section at the bottom of the blog.

Uruguay threaten to score a late winner as Maguire gets a crucial block to deny Valverde.

There is the final whistle and a very strange game comes to an end. Not a lot to write about for vast parts of the game but Uruguay could and maybe should have had two men sent off. White scored on his return from his England exile after being booed when coming on before conceding a late penalty, which Valverde scored.

Ugarte saw two yellow cards in the game yet was not sent off.

Thomas Tuchel has had words with the fourth official and has stormed down the tunnel. Absolute chaos in the last 10 minutes or so of this game!

GOAL! Valverde equalises for Uruguay

The Real Madrid puts away a clinical penalty, depositing it into the bottom left corner. He wheels away in celebration towards the Uruguay fans in that corner of Wembley.

09:47pm

PENALTY URUGUAY!

Just one replay for the referee and he points to the spot. Vinas got to the ball just ahead of White and the contact is adjudged to have been enough to give a penalty. White scores on his return from England exile but now gives away a late penalty.

Real Madrid’s Valverde to take...

Vinas pokes over the bar from inside the England six-yard box and then goes down, wanting a penalty, but those appeals are waved away. VAR does check to see if White fouled Vinas and, after a lengthy check, the referee is summoned to the screen...

Bowen is slipped in down the right and tries to take it around Muslera, who had come racing out of his goal but the Uruguay keeper gets enough of his leg to it to make the block.

Five added minutes.

09:42pmAnalysis

88 mins: England 1 Uruguay 0

England players have been booed by their own fans in the past - Ashley Cole, Harry Maguire - but surely it is unprecedented for one to booed having scored what looks like a winning goal as has just happened to Ben White on his return after a self-imposed exile? What a strange moment for White and for England.

09:41pmKey moments

87 mins: England 1 Uruguay 0

This is quite farcical. In the aftermath of England’s goal, Ugarte was shouting at the referee and was clearly shown a yellow card. Ugarte was already on a yellow card so should have been sent off. Now the fourth official is claiming that yellow card did not exist when we clearly saw it did. That is ridiculous. Ugarte has now gone off as a substitute but should have been sent off.

Former Liverpool striker Nunez is on for the visitors as part of a raft of changes.

09:39pm

85 mins: England 1 Uruguay 0

There is yet more chaos in the Uruguay penalty area from an England corner. There is a ridiculous amount of wrestling and players going to ground. How about just watching the ball?

GOAL! Returning White puts England in front

He was booed on his return from exile but he has put England ahead with 10 minutes of normal time remaining. Palmer’s inswinger is flicked on at the near post and is initially saved by Muslera. The ball is rolling towards the far corner and White makes sure it goes in by poking it into an empty net. VAR is taking a look at a possible foul by Wharton on Gimenez in the build-up to the goal. Did Wharton illegally block Gimenez? VAR has cleared the incident and the goal is given. That is one of those decisions where if it goes for you, you would say there is not much in that but if it goes against you, you would feel a touch aggrieved.

After good work from Palmer carrying the ball through the Uruguay half, Bowen then wins England a corner out on the right...

09:28pm

England have not created a huge deal tonight but they should take the lead there. Palmer whips in the free-kick from the right into the six-yard box, where Calvert-Lewin has a free header but somehow heads wide.

That has been coming for ages as finally a Uruguay player is booked. It is a stupid and reckless change from Ugarte on Palmer.

09:22pmKey moments

68 mins: England 0 Uruguay 0

It is a good job for Uruguay that this is a friendly as by this point they would have had countless bookings.

Thomas Tuchel is going to make a quarter of changes. Barnes, Mainoo, Hall and White come on. White, out of his England exile, returns and is welcomed back with plenty of boos from the home fans, which is not massively surprising.

There is a quadruple substitution from England with Kobbie Mainoo, Harvey Barnes, Lewis Hall and Ben White coming on.... who is roundly booed when his name is announced.

09:20pm

66 mins: England 0 Uruguay 0

Garner brings down de Arrascaeta not far outside the England penalty area, presenting Uruguay a decent shooting opportunity. The visitors are yet to register a shot on target tonight but could that end here?

The man who won the free-kick takes it but de Arrascaeta’s effort is off target.

Double change for Uruguay as Viñas and Pellistri are on for Aguirre and M Araujo.

61 mins: England 0 Uruguay 0

Thomas Tuchel would have been hoping for more intensity and energy from his side after the break but it feels like much of the same since half-time. Not much to write home about from this performance thus far.

09:10pm

56 mins: England 0 Uruguay 0

Foden’s night is indeed done as Palmer replaces him. It may well have been the plan for Foden to come off at this point anyway but that knock may also have contributed to his departure in the end. Calvert-Lewin is also on for his first England appearance in a few years as he replaces Solanke.

Now it looks like Cole Palmer is coming on which probably means the end of the game for Phil Foden who is hobbling.

09:07pmAnalysis

53 mins: England 0 Uruguay 0

There have been a few hefty challenges from Uruguay and the latest has incensed Thomas Tuchel - a really violent tackle on Phil Foden by Ronald Araujo. The Manchester City playmaker was caught very heavily on his right ankle and Tuchel is now making his feelings known to Marcelo Bielsa. It has not been a very friendly friendly from Uruguay so far.

09:05pmKey moments • Analysis • Video

51 mins: England 0 Uruguay 0

The England players are furious with a challenge from R Araujo on Foden. Thomas Tuchel is losing it on the touchline and cannot contain his anger at that tackle. R Araujo did initially win the ball but the follow-through catches Foden. Tuchel has had a word with the fourth official and his opposite number Marcelo Bielsa. It is a nasty challenge from R Araujo but, despite VAR being in use tonight, they will not intervene. Foden is now back up to his feet and moving a little gingerly, not surprisingly.

Unpleasant challenge from Araújo on Foden. He knew exactly what he was doing there. He didn’t need to go with that speed and force to win that ball, and the ferocity gave Foden no chance to get his foot/leg out the way.

09:02pm

Wharton is brought down just outside the Uruguay penalty area and it looks a certain foul but play goes on. There have been a few dubious decisions from the referee tonight.

09:01pmAnalysis

47 mins: England 0 Uruguay 0

Adam Wharton is the only half-time substitution for England, replacing Jordan Henderson. The Crystal Palace midfielder has been told by Thomas Tuchel that he is in direct competition with Henderson and Elliot Anderson for the no6 role and here is his chance to stake a claim. It also means Harry Maguire has assumed the captaincy in his return to the international set-up.

08:58pm

Second half

We are back under way at Wembley. Let’s hope for better in the second half.

Thomas Tuchel has made a change at the break. Wharton was put through his paces during the break and he comes on for Henderson. The captain’s armband has gone to Maguire with Henderson going off. To sum up though how clunky this game has been, we are ready to restart but it is delayed as Wharton was not actually immediately ready to come. Sums up the night really.

Half-time

A long and disjointed first half is brought to an end and it remains goalless at Wembley. England have not been woeful but a number of players have failed to grasp the opportunity put in front of them tonight by Thomas Tuchel.

08:39pmKey moments

45+6 mins: England 0 Uruguay 0

Marcus Rashford has had a decent half. Skipped past his Barcelona team-mate Ronald Araújo earlier. He has also got pride of place on Wembley Way as one of the higher profile Nike endorsees in the squad and therefore prominent modelling the new kit.

08:38pm

45+5 mins: England 0 Uruguay 0

Canobbio wastes a second decent chance of the half for the visitors as he drives towards the England box and has the space to get his shot away from just outside the box but his effort is way off target.

08:37pmAnalysis

45+4 mins: England 0 Uruguay 0

Uruguay are 17th in the Fifa world rankings. They have not showed much ambition here and their set-up is more like what England would expect in qualification against lower-ranked opponents. I’m not sure what Tuchel is getting out of this so far. The friendlies before the Euros against Brazil and Belgium were good tests.

08:36pmAnalysis

45+2 mins: England 0 Uruguay 0

Marcus Rashford has just paid the price after a fantastic run down the left, beating several Uruguayan defenders and delivering a dangerous cross. The next time he received the ball he was just kicked by Agustin Canobbio in a nasty challenge.

08:34pm

45 mins: England 0 Uruguay 0

Due to a few injuries in this first half, there will be plenty of added time, seven minutes to be exact.

It is probably safe to describe this half as a little disjointed and clunky.

08:29pm

40 mins: England 0 Uruguay 0

England give the ball away and Canobbio lays it off for Valverde, whose shot is blocked. England the counter and Rashford does really well down their left before cutting it across the byline but no-one is there to meet the cross.

Madueke has gone down again and it looks like his night is done. It appears the injury is to his head as it was a heavy collision with Aguirre. Bowen is on in his place. A few injuries in this first half have not helped with the rhythm and it has contributed towards it being a stop-start half.

Worrying for Arsenal that Noni Madueke has gone off so early, having been hurt as he was tackled in the act of shooting. He seemed to be moving ok but has gone straight down the tunnel. Hopefully it is only a precaution.

36 mins: England 0 Uruguay 0

Tough watch so far. Uruguay are very structured in their shape. Disciplined lines are proving hard to pass through and they swarm anyone who tries to break those lines in the final third. Strong core with stars Valverde and  Araújo in the central midfield and defensive positions respectively. They don’t feel any great need to control possession, but they defend the final third very well. Not the free-flowing Leeds United of the Bielsa era - but needs must.

08:24pmAnalysis

34 mins: England 0 Uruguay 0

Thomas Tuchel is using the break in play while Noni Madueke receives treatment to have an impromptu team-talk. In particular he is speaking to his forward players, especially Marcus Rashford who is yet to get into the game against an obdurate and well-organised Uruguay.

08:22pm

32 mins: England 0 Uruguay 0

Madueke has gone down inside the Uruguay penalty area but any penalty appeals are waved away. Madueke was just about to take a shot as Aguirre came in to make the challenge. It was a heavy contact but not a foul as Aguirre did get a block on the ball and the collision was accidental.

Big collision - Bradley collyer/PA08:21pmAnalysis

31 mins: England 0 Uruguay 0

This Uruguay does not feel very much like what we would expect from a Marcelo Bielsa team. They are very defensive, sitting deep and don’t really seem to even want the ball at times and are happy to try and hit England on the break. It is a good test, for sure, for England. Bielsa is apparently under pressure, even this close to the World Cup, and could - it is said - lose his job if Uruguay are badly beaten here.

Fernando Muslera in goal for Uruguay is winning his 134th cap for Uruguay tonight - that’s even more than Peter Shilton won for England. The 39-year-old was Galatasaray’s first choice for 14 seasons. He was born on the day - 16 June, 1986 - that Uruguay were eliminated by Argentina in the last 16 of Mexico ‘86. Just been booked for time wasting. Old habits die hard.

Atlético Madrid defender Gimenez is going to come on for Piquerez, who has been stretchered off and looks in some pain.

During the break in play the cameras have cut to a box where the 11 England players who were due to meet up with the squad tomorrow are sitting. All have clearly arrived early including captain Harry Kane and Declan Rice. Meanwhile Piquerez’s injury may well be serious as he is being placed on a stretcher. But why did he shuffle back on the pitch if he was that badly hurt?

Piquerez blocks a Madueke cross near the byline and stays down. There is a little bit of tension between the England and Uruguay players, despite the fact that Madeuke was not at fault at all. Piquerez was initially off the pitch but then rolled onto the pitch. The Uruguay medical staff have come on and Piquerez looks like he will be unable to continue.

There are boos after Uruguay’s Joaquin Piquerez goes down injured after a challenge on Noni Madueke, lands off the pitch - and then bum shuffles back on to it so play cannot re-start and he can receive treatment. In truth the assistant referee, who was only 10 yards away, should have stopped that one.

07:58pm

9 mins: England 0 Uruguay 0

Solanke drives through the centre of the Uruguay half and gets his shot away as he approaches the box. His effort is deflected behind for a second England corner of the night. Garner will take again and the delivery goes beyond the far post, where Solanke heads back across goal but Uruguay clear. There were a few appeals from England for a penalty with Maguire on the deck but those appeals are waved away.

07:56pmAnalysis

8 mins: England 0 Uruguay 0

This represents a huge chance for Phil Foden who starts in the no10 role ahead of Cole Palmer. Thomas Tuchel has basically said the pair are up against each other to get a chance in that position and it is Foden who gets the first opportunity. He will have to work hard to get on the ball against this Uruguayan midfield.

England are wearing their new ‘away’ kit - at home and even though there is no clash with Uruguay’s colours - with red shirts and navy blue shirts. The makers Nike say they have tapped into English culture, heritage and identity with a ‘Guts 2 Glory’ campaign. Apparently. Meanwhile it is good to see former Leeds United manager and now Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa still adopting his usual approach of sitting down in the technical area. There is no bucket, though, as he makes use of a drinks cooler.

England will have the first corner of the night after a bit of a scramble inside the Uruguay penalty area.

Garner, on his senior debut, will take out on the left. His delivery finds Maguire at the back post but the Manchester United centre-back does not time his jump quite right and his header loops a long way over the bar.

You would have to say there are not that many players in this England starting XI tonight who are guaranteed a spot in the squad for the summer so these next 90 minutes are huge.

Players joining up with the England squad after tonight: Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Morgan Rogers, Anthony Gordon, Elliot Anderson, Nico O’Reilly, Marc Guéhi, Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn, Dean Henderson.

England are wearing their new Nike away kit. Their home kit is similar to Mexico 86 - and they could be heading back to the Azteca this summer if they win their group and reach the last-16.

Kick-off

We are under way at Wembley. Including tonight, there are just four more games left for England before the World Cup so every minute counts for Thomas Tuchel and his players. England are not playing in white tonight, instead their new red away kit!

My early thoughts on the new England away strip being worn at Wembley for marketing reasons is that the blue shorts don’t work. Should always be white shorts with the red shirts. It was right  in ‘66 and it’s right in ‘26. Uruguay on the other hand - they haven’t messed with tradition. Their kit is splendid.

07:42pm

Anthem time

After a lights show at Wembley, it is time to welcome the players onto the pitch for the national anthems. There was a rather strange moment in the tunnel before the sides emerged as Uruguay captain Valverde was stood on his own in the tunnel, with none of his teammates there for quite some time. Valverde, after his hat-trick in the Champions League against Manchester City a few weeks ago, clearly keen to get going. England took quite a while to emerge from the home dressing room. “Himno Nacional del Uruguay” followed by “God Save The King”. A reminder of the teams:

England: Trafford, Livramento, Tomori, Maguire, Spence, Henderson, Garner, Foden, Madueke, Rashford, Solanke.
Substitutes: Ramsdale, Pickford, Steele, Hall, Wharton, Stones, Palmer, White, Mainoo, Calvert-Lewin, Barnes, Bowen.

Uruguay: Muslera, R Araujo, Ugarte, De Arrascaeta, Varela, Canobbio, Valverde, Olivera, M Araujo, Piquerez, Aguirre.
Substitutes: Rochet, Mele, Gimenez, Caceres, Sanabria, De La Cruz, Martinez, Nunez, Pellistri, Vina, Rodriguez, Vinas, Torres, Rodriguez.

Oasis featuring strongly on the Wembley playlist tonight, although the dance version of Wonderwall is a bit different. Tapping into the feel-good summer last year at the national stadium.

07:37pm

Chance for Calvert-Lewin

The Leeds striker is back in the England squad for the first time in a while and he will be hoping to get some good minutes off the bench tonight. It feels like that striker spot behind Harry Kane is absolutely up for grabs so all to play for.

Thomas Tuchel on Ben White’s recall

“First of all, I think everyone deserves a second chance. Second, I do not know exactly what happened. I was also not 100 per cent interested because I wanted to open a new page and a new book and a new opportunity. Once I asked Ben if he would be ready to play for me and for England, and he straightaway, without hesitation, said he would love to come back and was desperate to come back.

“[When he got the call after Jarell Quansah’s injury] The reaction came within seconds. It was very euphoric, very positive and very emotional about it. That showed me he really means it. The way he behaves and the way he has trained here in camp has been exceptional, very, very good. It shows his quality.

“I think it is necessary he clears the air with his team-mates and I think he will with players who come back who were in the World Cup together with him. Then we go from there. Let’s see how it goes and let’s see how he feels, if he feels as comfortable and as confident as he thought he would. Until now, this is the case. He has my support, hopefully he gets the support from the spectators and we take it from there.”

It is a big 45 minutes for the Manchester City No2 to book his place on the plane to the World Cup. Fikayo Tomori is also in the line-up against Uruguay, after his last cap in 2023. It is also a big chance for Phil Foden, who will play in the No10 role

Flashback: 19 June, 2014- Uruguay 2 England 1 (World Cup 2014)

Luis Suarez’s double secured victory for Uruguay over England as Roy Hodgson’s side were dumped out of the World Cup in Brazil, finishing bottom of Group D. Here is how the two squads looked that day in Sao Paulo:

Uruguay: Muslera, Godin, Gimenez, Rios, Pereira, Caceres, Lodeiro, Rodriguez, Gonzalez, Suarez, Cavani.
Substitutes: Gargano, Munoz, Forlan, Ramirez, Silva, Lugano, Perez, Hernandez.

England: Hart, Jagielka, Cahill, Baines, Johnson, Rooney, Henderson, Gerrard, Sturridge, Welbeck, Sterling.
Substitutes: Lampard, Shaw, Milner, Forster, Jones, Smalling, Foster, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wilshere

Uruguay’s Jose Maria Gimenez is still in the Uruguay squad but plenty of their key players from back then have retired. For England, Jordan Henderson and Luke Shaw are both still in and around the squad whilst James Milner may be retired internationally but is still going in the Premier League.

06:43pm

Tuchel on Alexander-Arnold

There was no place in the squad for Real Madrid’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and he did not even earn a call-up when his former Liverpool teammate Jarell Quansah pulled out, with the previously exiled Ben White being called up instead. Thomas Tuchel was asked earlier this week about about the decision not to call Alexander-Arnold into the squad:

“It is just a choice. A sporting choice. Maybe a hard choice. And maybe to a degree unfair. The choice was for White because I saw him play in the cup final, in the Champions League match before and he was back to his old self. It was a chance to meet him in person. I know what Trent can give us so the choice was for Ben and Tino Livramento, to stick with the guys who had a good camp with us in September, November, December. Djed Spence as well. I know it creates noise when you leave a player like Trent out. We had a call, I tried to explain the situation. He just has to accept it.”

Do you think Alexander-Arnold should have been named in the original squad and is Tuchel wrong not to call him up? You can have your say in the comments section at the bottom of the blog.

Home nation heartbreak

England and Scotland may have booked their place at the World Cup in the summer but there will be no more home nations participating after a chastening evening last night. Wales’ hopes were ended by Bosnia on penalties, the Republic of Ireland also fell on penalties to Czechia whilst Northern Ireland were beaten by Italy.

World Cup nearing into view

England’s preparations for this summer’s World Cup continue as they host Uruguay at Wembley with just a few games remaining before the tournament. Thomas Tuchel’s side will also play Japan during this international break, with only games against New Zealand and Costa Rica to come in June before the World Cup begins.

England have won their last six games, all without conceding a single goal. They have not lost since a 3-1 friendly defeat to Senegal last June. Tuchel named a 35-man squad for this international break, with 11 players only joining up after tonight’s game. Those players are Dean Henderson, Dan Burn, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Nico O’Reilly, Eliott Anderson, Declan Rice, Morgan Rogers, Anthony Gordon, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka. So tonight represents a big opportunity for the likes of James Garner, Kobbie Mainoo and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to stake their claim for a spot on the plane in the summer.

“It is a good atmosphere,” Tuchel said. “We addressed it right away that it is the last camp and encouraged everyone to be the best version of themselves. We try to build a team effort, we demand a positive attitude, that everyone tries to connect as quick as possible. We are ready to have a good match tomorrow [tonight]. Will everything work smoothly on the pitch? Probably not. But that is the situation they are in. It is a positive pressure because they fight for England and a ticket to the World Cup. Decisions will be made later in May. Tomorrow [tonight] is just  a chance to impress.”

Uruguay, led by Marcelo Bielsa, finished fourth in the South American section of World Cup qualifying. They did not win either of their two friendlies during the November international break, drawing 0-0 against Mexico and heavily losing 5-1 to the USA. After tonight’s game, Uruguay will then take on Algeria in Turin on Tuesday. Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde, former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez and Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte are in their ranks but Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is out. Bielsa’s side are in Group H at the World Cup alongside Spain, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia.

These sides last met at the 2014 World Cup, with Uruguay winning 2-1 on that occasion thanks to a double from Luis Suarez. England’s recent record against South American opposition is not good, winning just two of their last 11 meetings.
