When Kos stopped the clock tonight in 1:34.13, it solidified the Hungarian as the most dominant backstroker in collegiate history. It was evident Kos was feeling a week's worth of competition throughout the race, but the senior was still able to deliver the fastest performance in history, combining speed, endurance and grit.
It has become commonplace that Kos will swim the fastest time ever when he hits the water in a backstroke event, a feat that should not go unnoticed. A new NCAA record is never a small accomplishment, even when it is broken by less than two-tenths of a second. Therefore, on the final day of competition, with three full days of racing under his belt, this record is as impressive as any other effort this week.

On the opening 50 Kos was being challenged by Florida's Johnny Marshall, flipping even after two laps. Kos then established control of the race, out-splitting Marshall on the second 50 yards.
The big difference was the senior's third 50, where he swam a full second faster than Marshall from the 100 yard mark to turn at the 150. His underwater work was executed at the highest level, pushing past the rest of the field with technical excellence.
On the final two laps of the pool the battle shifted from Kos vs. Marshall to Kos vs. the clock. The Longhorn closed just fast enough, taking down the record and securing another NCAA title.
What truly separated Kos from the field was his closing speed. Kos fought through fatigue better than anyone else, completing another backstroke sweep. He is able to find another gear when others are stuck, making him one of the best swimmers in the world in the 200 distance.
Beyond the time itself, the swim represents yet another shift in the backstroke's competitive standard. The 200 back has long been a showcase of endurance and technique, Kos' strategy has displayed a combination of elite speed on top of endurance. His aggressive strategy and sustained speed makes him the best to ever do it in the yards pool. His record not only cements his place among the most elite NCAA swimmers to ever compete in collegiate waters, but also raises expectations for future competitors aiming to push the boundaries of the event even further.
