Mumbai, April 1: The BMC has progressed its six-year-long pending smart parking initiative, with the civic standing committee on Wednesday approving the appointment of a contractor to build a digital dashboard mapping parking spaces across Mumbai. The system will be accessible to the public via a mobile app and website, with an initial project outlay of Rs 3 crore.

The BMC has been working on digitising its parking system since 2020. Currently, it manages 26 off-street and more than 350 on-street parking locations, but a persistent shortage still forces motorists onto roads and footpaths, worsening congestion and affecting pedestrians.

The new plan aims to integrate BMC facilities with private parking in malls and commercial complexes, while residential associations will be encouraged to open their spaces during daytime hours.

Pilot rollout and features

The civic body plans to develop the dashboard within a year, starting with a pilot in five wards spanning the island city, western, and eastern suburbs. Through the mobile app, drivers can view live availability and book parking spaces ahead of time.

"Travelers heading from Churchgate to Mahim will be able to see available parking slots in advance and reserve a spot online, ensuring hassle-free parking upon arrival," explained the official.

"The dashboard will also guide motorists to alternative options, such as public transport, when parking is unavailable, helping to cut congestion," he added.

Rising vehicle pressure

With vehicular traffic on the rise, parking has emerged as a major civic challenge in Mumbai, a city already grappling with a land crunch. Among India’s metro cities, Mumbai has the highest vehicle density, with government data showing 2,300 cars per kilometre of road—a sharp increase from 1,840 in 2019 and 1,150 in 2014.

Regional Transport Office records further reveal that 3.02 lakh vehicles were registered in the city in 2025 alone, up 8.24% from 2.79 lakh in 2024.
