The Sooners lost the opening game of their weekend series against Alabama at home on Thursday, 10-7, in a game that wasn't that close. OU has now lost four straight Southeastern Conference games and finds itself two games under .500 at the one-third mark of SEC play.

Alabama took advantage early and never looked back, chasing Oklahoma starter LJ Mercurius after just 1 1/3 innings. He gave up a lead-off home run to start the game and allowed a second first-run inning after an RBI single scored Brady Neal, who had tripled. Things only grew worse.

Mercurius hit two of the first three batters he faced in the second inning and gave up a three-run home run to Bryce Fowler, the same player who went yard in the first. A walk and a single later and Mercurius' night was over, lifted for his brother Xander, who gave up a home run on the first pitch he threw. A double and another homer followed and before the second was finished, Alabama was up 10-0.

After Jaxon Willits hit an RBI single in the first, the Sooners chipped away again with three runs in the fifth inning when Nolan Stevens and Trey Gambill homered. Oklahoma would plate three more in the ninth, but at that point, it was too late.

LJ Mercurius picked up the loss, giving up seven runs on five hits, a walk and two bean-balls. Gambill had the best game at the plate, going 3 for 5 with the homer, two runs and two RBIs.

Game 2 is set from Norman at 1 p.m. on Friday.
